Overtime, I develop my characters and they do start feeling real, in a sense. I give them a personality, flaws, a style, and they begin to seem like a real person.

Yep, it feels real and then it doesn't. Reading a book makes you feel like the characters are real since you get immersed in it. But after reading, when you think about it again, you realize how non fiction the characters are.

have read several books that get me feeling like the characters are real. I tend to get a little emotional when a main character dies. I know it sounds a little crazy, but it makes me feel like someone I know has just died.

Most definitely! At least main characters. If I'm writing from someone's perspective I need to be able to get inside their head and understand how they would respond to each situation, how their past informs that, etc. - there's so much that goes into writing as another person (even a person who may share some traits with myself) and there's definitely something that becomes very real about that.
