I have just finished reading all of the James Herriot books and was wondering if anyone could recommend an author who is similar.

I think this post should be in the Authors forum but I would just like to say James Herriot was a unique man, a unique vet and a unique author. No other books could come close!

I'll re-post in Authors forum but not sure if it's worth it now judging by your reply. Oh well I'll give it a go, I enjoyed reading him so much, you never know, someone may know of an Author who writes on the same subject that I might enjoy!

I have to agree with Maud Fitch. I read four or five books over twenty years ago, enjoyed them all very much and have never found any author who could come close. James Herriot and his books are in a class of their own.

James Herriot is the pen name of James Alfred Wight, OBE, FRCVS also known as Alf Wight, an English veterinary surgeon and writer. Wight is best known for his semi-autobiographical stories, often referred to collectively as All Creatures Great and Small, a title used in some editions and in film and television adaptations.

In 1939, at the age of 23, he qualified as a veterinary surgeon with Glasgow Veterinary College. In January 1940, he took a brief job at a veterinary practice in Sunderland, but moved in July to work in a rural practice based in the town of Thirsk, Yorkshire, close to the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, where he was to remain for the rest of his life. The original practice is now a museum,

I love reading his books and they are among the few I don't mind rereading ... never found anyone who comes close regarding animal/vet stories though

I can't think of anyone else who has written books like Herriot's. He's one of a kind. I read all of his books when I was a teenager, and absolutely loved them. They made me want to be a vet and not want to be a vet at the same time (all the mud and poop, I guess). I loved the characters, and his writing style is so enticing. If there is anyone else like him, I'd like to know it too so I can read them!

When I was younger my mom introduced me to him. I fell in love with the books. Although my dreams of becoming a vet faded away my admiration for the books and the author never did. It was interesting to see the transition at the time that he was practicing veterinary medicine, from farm animals to small animals and the misunderstanding often associated with it .

I have read all the Herriot books numerous times! Love them! Try Nick Trout? He writes short, true life stories about his career as a veterinary surgeon.

I dont know any authors that are also vets but I know an author called Gerald Durrell and its all about his experiences as a boy on the island of Corfu. Its mostly about animals and its very funny.
