Read The God of Small Things a couple of years ago & as far as I remember I didn't really enjoy it

I really loved "Midnight's Children" by Salman Rushdie. Bit of a cliche I know, what with Rushdie being the author and the book winning the Booker of Bookers prize. However I did really enjoy it.

I can remember reading a novel years ago 'The Room On The Roof' by Ruskin Bond. It was about a teenage Indian boy who had lost his parents. Apparently it was based on the real life Indian upbringing of Ruskin Bond, I enjoyed it. Of course we all know 'Slumdog Millionaire' was an adaptation of the novel 'Q & A' written by Indian author Vikas Swarup.

Undoubtedly Midnight's Children and The Satanic Versus are the greatest books in English to emerge from India - but there are other books that cast a warm glow - All About H Hatter and Hindoo Holiday, both very dated were nevertheless very enjoyable reads.

Midnight's children is my pick. Recently I have read this novel called Calcutta Chromosome by Amitav Ghosh. It was a good one. Planning to read more of his. There are some great Indian novels published in regional Indian languages like Tamil, Malayalam and Bengali. But most of them aren't translated to English.

"House of Blue Mangoes" by David Davidar -- wished he would come out with another work of fiction.

Last week I just finished reading "The Inheritance of Loss" by Kiran Desai which I really enjoyed. Wouldn't mind reading other people's comments on this book. Also enjoyed "The White Tiger".

Since I've read quite a lot of books by Indian authors, then I've got a few favourites - "A Suitable Boy" by Vikram Seth is my most recent favourite, it's a huge book, but has excellent characters and plot and the writing is just amazing. And just about anything by R. K. Narayan is excellent. Though for example "The Bachelor of Arts" is one of my personal favourites.

Recently books by Chetan Bhagath are very famous and widely read by the youth in India, an as pointed out previously novels by RK Narayan are ever green, Guide, Malgudi days are very famous.

Malgudi Days-Swamy and His Friends- Authored by R.K.Narayan is well appreciated by one and all. Author is extra ordinary, his story telling talent is well received. Malgudi Days series is his Master Piece. Must read.

I like Sea of poppies by Amitav Ghosh and The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga as well.

I'm not sure that this is the "best", but several years ago, I read, "The Twentieth Wife" by Indu Sundaresan, and thought it was too good to put down. It's set in the Mughal period of India, and the story revolves around the life of Mehrunnisa and her love story with the crown prince. It's a fictional take on the lives of real people--if you enjoy a bit of Eastern history and a well written novel, I really recommend it!

I have very much enjoyed Rushdie and Lahiri though specific titles don't come to mind at this exact moment. For non-fiction, Katherine Boo wrote a wonderful non-fiction novel about the slums.
