Which country, in your estimation, has produced the best authors of all time?

Thats a tough one. Just about every country has produced great authors. I think its a toss-up between the UK and the USA.

That's a very easy one.....as an author myself, I can narrow it down to, not just to the Country, State or Street, but to the very house.....where I live! (Sorry. I'm quite humble really, honest!)

Fran, Thats like me saying that Raymond F. Jones and Orson Scott Card are the best authors, as they are from Utah. Especially Jones, he was from the same town I lived in. But thats OK. You got to stick up for your countrymen.

The back of beyond. Jack Kerouac ended a book with a word of caution to the reader: "If you liked this book,
destroy it. If you didn't like the book, destroy it. I insist on your freedom." Jack's gravesite is in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Where Jack is, is a larger question. That's what happens to guys who come with the dust and are gone with the wind.
They have no territorial imperative.

Why not include the southern hemisphere? If you gauge a good author by the accolades they have received, Australia has produced superlative award-winning authors, too. Perhaps we don't brag about it as much...

(Anyway, shouldn't this thread be in the Authors Forum?)

hmmm, another thing to throw into the mix is a timeline...
For centuries before America became what it is today, the middle east and the far east had their share of wonderful texts covering poetry, geography, politics, the human condition (philosophy) and good old love stories.

If you want to go back really far you could argue it was Sumer who inadvertently produced the most and best authors.

I am reading The Long Shining Waters by Danielle Sosin. It follows three women from three different time periods who live around Lake Superior. Sosin does a terrific job drawing her characters, remaining true to the Lake Superior region and giving us events that many of us relate to. It's a great book!

Sebald can reasonably contend to have invented much of this country's creative nonfiction, and that is simply a ... This is a writer that had common sense, verve and intricate knowledge....according to me India has produced the best writer of all time.
