F Paul Wilson your lucky day

Post by Ignominiousdeath »

F Paul Wilson is one of my favorite authors. I just happened to discover him by pulling one of his books of a used book store shelf (Midnight Mass) because it had a catchy title and pretty colors. What a tragedy it would have been had I just passed on these books and never discovered such great stories.

Disclaimer, despite receiving an "A" in honors English, no one is going to pay me for my literature reviews or plagiarize my eloquent verse when commenting on books. I read scientific journals and write scientific papers...so anything in normal english is a stretch. Bare with and forgive the grammatical errors, poor syntax and general disjointed thought.

F Paul Wilson's great series is the Repairman Jack series. A mix of metaphysical horror/sci-fi (I may be overstating it)where the protagonist is an off-the-grid "average" guy who "fixes" peoples' problems who happens to get tangled up with a huge end-of-the-world (Ally vs Otherness) struggle. The challenge with the series is that Wilson began with his adversary cycle first, then started the Repairman Jack series around the time he finished the adversary cycle. When writing the first book in the Repairman Jack series "The Tomb", Jack's story was suppose to end with this single book. However, Jack is a Bad-A (I hope I didn't lose credit with that) that people clamored for more, and thus a wonderful and deep series was born. However, Jack's story then becomes intertwined with the stories of the Adversary cycle. So far, things are pretty compatible but the Repairman Jack series is now at the point of time of the last Adversary cycle book, so Wilson is having to rewrite that book.

BOTTOM LINE: It is an awesome series, with great characters. Please read someone else's blog that better explains the series so it gets it's fair representation. I just want to recommend an awesome series and I know a few readers will be very pleased who end up picking his book and discovering the series. Others unfortunately will likely by disappointed...as with everything.

What I ask in return, if anyone who has read Wilson and has enjoyed his works, if know of any book series that you feel a person such as myself with potential similar tastes would enjoy, I would appreciate it very much. Other authors I love: Jonathan Maberry, Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child, Orson Scott Card, Joseph Delaney.

Ignominious, I also love the Repairman Jack series. I am looking forward to, but also dreading the end of the Adversary Cycle with The Dark at the End. I will read it in the next month or so. Please, no synopses of the book
yet!! It's hard to recommend another series like Repairman Jack, because no other character in any series has
Jack's otherwordly attributes! Jack Reacher (why are so many of the heroes in books and TV named Jack?) is
a character who is smart, and tough like Repairman Jack, but is all human! (Lee Child is the author) Lucas Davenport (John Sandford - "Prey" series) is a no-nonsense cop who also is tough and smart. I'll keep thinking!!

I love the Repairman Jack books. I read most of them through the library last summer. I own a few and just placed a huge order through Amazon for the rest. I even enjoy the young Repairman Jack books.

I have not read the Repairman Jack books but after reading these comments I surely will now! I'm a HUGE fan of John Sandford's 'Prey' series. I got to meet Mr. Sandford at one of his book signings and he was a super nice guy. And I have a fictional character crush on his detective Lucas Davenport! ;)
