Hi

If anyone could please recommend some british or irish fiction authors I would really appreciate it.
Preferably not as far back as Jane Austen, but more recent ones would be great.

I could give you plenty but maybe we can narrow it down if you say what genre are you interested in?

I could list loads but maybe if you say what genre you're interested in we can narrow it down a bit

My favourite genres are fantasy, thriller and crime. Some examples of authors I enjoy are Lesley Pearse, Marian Keyes and Terry Pratchett.

First there's "The Secrets Of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel", a series written by Irishman Michael Scott.
And there's Irish writers Cathy Kelly "The House On Willow Street " and Sarah Webb. Sarah has signed a six-figure film deal for her debut novel "Amy Green Teen Agony Queen" set in Dublin.
Of course my all-time favourite (and he's touring with author talks soon) is the inimitable Derek Landy with the amazing "Skulduggery Pleasant" series which is a mixture of fantasy, thriller and the criminal element.

I'm sure my friend Fran can enlighten you further with some excellent reading choices from that part of the world.

Have you read any of Benjamin Black (aka John Banville)? ... I'd recommend "Elegy for April"
Roddy Doyle's "A Greyhound of a Girl" is a good laugh with a bit of crazy imagination
Joseph O'Connor "Ghost Light" ... a beautiful book especially if you're familiar with the playwright J M Synge
"Bogchild" by Siobhan Dowd
and of course there's Emma Donoghue's "Room" .......

For fantasy books, Neil Gaiman, China Miéville and Kate Griffen are all British, John Connolly's somewhere between fantasy and crime, he's Irish by birth but bases his stories in America. Ken Bruen's an Irish crime writer, his Jack Taylor series is based in Galway.

For crime you could try Val McDermit, Ian Rankin and/or Ruth Rendel. Not too long ago (20th Century) John Wyndam wrote some great books - Day of the Triffids is much much better than its title suggests, and Lee Gimenez is a contemporary scifi writer.

Hope you have enough in these posts to keep you going for a while!!

I was really interested in reading George Orwell's book called 1984. The ending wasn't to my exact liking but overall it was well written.

Any novels and all by Irish writer Jennifer Johnston, also Edna O'Brien, both wonderful writers.

Also I have not long discovered Colum mcCann, I fell in love with "Song Dogs".

John Fowles..." the collector ", " the magus " ( " the french lieutenants woman " )...

Ben Aaronovich - He used to write for Dr Who and now writes a brilliant paranormal crime series, starting with Rivers of London (I think this is called Midnight Riot in the States). British to his bones!

Sarah Alderson, I believe is British.
Her books currently are YA.

Jasper Fforde, especially Shades of Grey. But really, anything he's written.

I have so far enjoyed Robert Ludlum and Ken Follett's novels.
