Does anyone love Neil Gaiman as much as I do?

Post by jessmess »

SO, I'm a big fan of Neil Gaiman. I've read almost everything he's written and I'm currently reading "Prince of Stories: The Many Worlds of Neil Gaiman". I'm finding it extremely fascinating.

Anyone else a big fan?

It's funny, I have seen a few interviews he has done and a few interviews where he is interviewing another author. From watching these, I know that I would like his books, but have never got around to reading one. I will read one of his this year. :D

I've read a small handful of his books. I read Coraline way back when, but in more recent years I've come to really enjoy his work.

I started more recently with American Gods, then moved on to Good Omens which he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett. Both were excellent. I have also read Anansi Boys, which was in a similar tone to American Gods but far more strange.

All said I've never read something by Gaiman that I didn't thoroughly enjoy.

I think he's a good author.

But the funny thing is that Neil is one of the few authors that I've ever actually met.
It was at a Science Fiction Convention in Brighton UK in 1997.
He had given a little talk and was relaxing in the car,
happy to talk to whoever was around.
What a nice man!

Wow! That's awesome! I've heard that he's a really nice, genuine person…I would love to get the chance to meet him, that would be so cool!

I loved Neverwhere but stopped reading his work after Smoke and Mirrors.

I love his work! My first encounter with his work was Neverwhere and it remains, after reading it many times, one of my very favorite books. I find Neil's stories to be darker but a lot more emotional than most. His writing is simple but there is always more to everything than the sentence says. His character development is also great (I have a pet peeve for authro's who can't make their characters' thoughts seem consistent). I also just read his newest book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane and, while it wasn't my favorite of his works, still held the same magic and depth as all his others.

Isn't it strange the way we use language?

Shouldn't we be talking about 'loving Neil Gaiman's work' ?
Instead, we talk about 'loving' the man, and, as the person above says, 'like him so far'.
Him?
You don't know him!
He might be cruel to cats.
He might be avoiding paying tax.

Let's get it right: LOVE the books, respect the author. Not LOVE the author and be devoted to the books, please.

I love his books! I've read just about everything that he has written. He is always one of the authors that I try to recommend to my friends.

:D Neil Gaiman is a champion of libraries and on 14 October at the Barbican Centre, London, he presented the Reading Agency's second annual lecture.

Quote "Well meaning adults can easily destroy a child's love of reading - do not discourage children from reading because you feel they're reading the wrong thing. There is no such thing as the wrong thing to be reading and no bad fiction for kids." Neil Gaiman.

This link has the video and transcript of his speech:

Anansi Boys is my first Neil Gaiman book. I'm not a huge fan of fantasy novels in general, but I enjoyed it. Will definitely keep a lookout for his books!

I've just finished The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and enjoyed it. Neverwhere and American Gods are two of my favourite books, and I'm working my way through the original Sandman[i/] series.

I love the way he makes the fantastic sound so normal that it turns everything upside down, and all of the books I've read by him have been the type to really stick in my mind for a while afterwards.

Possibly one of the most creative minds of our time, I have yet to find anyone more insightful and inventive. Some of his ideas just blow me away like 'What kind of head must you have to have thought of that?'
Stardust is my personal favourite but I also really love his collaboration with the incredible Terry Pratchett for Good Omens. Two of the finest fantasy writers in the world together - if you love either one it's unmissable.
