There are tons of authors out there that are really good at what they do and receive all the recognition they deserve, but what about all those authors out there that don't get the critic endorsements that we feel they deserve.

One of these authors I feel is ‎Cecelia Ahern, her characters are always so vividly real and her books have such a strong story that they pull you in and really make you feel like your there, you cry with her characters and rejoice with them. They have a way of making you think and really connect and feel like its happening to you.

I am an underrated author (hahahaha!).

I like a lot of underrated authors; Murasaki Shikibu is one, Howard Schwartz, and Pearl Buck. She DID write other books besides The Good Earth.

I always feel that CJ Cherryh doesn't get the respect she deserves for her groundbreaking work in science fiction. Normally when the subject of classic science fiction comes up, its all Clarke and Asimov and Dick, but there's a lot less attention given to Cherryh, who's been doing her own thing for a long time, and who has come up with some fantastic and poignant stories.

Lincoln Hall. His 'Dead Lucky' book was amazing, but didn't sell well.

Michael Morpurgo is underrated, he's one of the best authors I know. He's never dissappointed me.

Damon Runyon. Sure, everyone's heard of Guys and Dolls, but few read him today or talk about him. His writing style is very unique and few writers can bring entire neighborhoods to life as convincingly as he had. When I read him I find it hard to believe that all these characters (and the old Broadway) are long gone.

These are just a few authors whose books I have read and thoroughly enjoyed that I believe are underrated.

M.A. Foster, if you like deep but rewarding psychological sci-fi/fantasy. I say "deep", but they aren't overly complex in wording or terminology which can be distracting. His books are very thought-provoking, extremely immersive and have outstanding characters and created worlds. I felt The Transformer and The Book of the Ler trilogies were both excellent, as well as the solo novel "Waves".

I agree with the above response of C.J. Cherryh. I've read many, many authors in all genres but she is the only author I buy all of their work hard cover (if offered), first edition, and will pre-order. Also have or seek out the rare and collectibles.

Mark Helprin is one of the most Underrated Authors! He writes fantastic novels, and never makes romance mushy-gushy.

This is a generic rather than a specific comment, I sometimes think that because we're in a brilliant period for historical fiction - I adore Philippa Gregory, Hilary Mantel, etc - that there's a tendency to overlook the fact that wonderful as they are, they didn't invent historical fiction - I still read and love books written in previous decades by Jean Plaidy, Norah Lofts and Hilda Lewis.
