OK, so here's the deal. I am finding that as I get older I am becoming fussier about who and what I read. Maybe it is becuase I have less time to spare or perhaps I'm just metamorphising into grumpy old age better than anticipated. Either way, it's a bit of a drag,as I often find I don't read books to completion and have trouble finding authors I enjoy. I was hoping that if I list the authors I do enjoy, others may be able to recommend some that are of the same calibre. Here goes:

Scott Orson Card
Peter Hamilton
Haruki Murakami
Ken Follet

I know what you mean. YA often seems too thin a read for me. You've listed two of my favorites, George R.R. Martin and Orson Scott Card, so here's my offering (of which she is also a good friend of Mr. Martin): Diana Gabaldon. Her books are hefty, but they are SOOOO good. She pulls in historical and fantasy elements, time travel, drool-worthy chivalrous Scottish men, and a writing style that captures the imagination and refuses to let go. I happen to devour books, but to give you an idea of how addicting she is, I'm currently re-reading the series. I NEVER re-read a series. If you're looking for a book with more meat to it, definitely check out her first book, Outlander. It contains those age-old storylines of lost love, romance, intrigue, and dastardly deeds, but she manages to put this amazingly realistic spin on it. (Lord, she even adds men farting in their sleep in one scene. It's a much later book, but it made me giggle. After all, what wife hasn't woken up to a mystery smell and sound at 3 am? )

Thanks scuba_steve. Maybe I am just too fussy, as I downloaded Outlander and the second in the series on Audio as they sounded exactly like what I would normally enjoy. Unfortunately, I had so much trouble getting into it that I never got past the first 10 chapters. I guess, the part that I had initial trouble with was the ease with which the protagonist left her past life behind....it just didn't ring true to me. Anyway, I had heard such rave reviews about it, that I was very dissapointed by my rsponse. Maybe it's time to have another go at it!

Rick Riordan, he writes sci-fi and I have loved his books for years.
