Who is your favorite Steinbeck character?
Mine is Mack from Cannery Row. Mack is smart but uneducated, a natural leader who cares for his flock of bums and makes sure they get their fair share of food, shelter, and especially liquor, and that they do not stray (i.e., don't join the "normals" and do something stupid like hold down a job). He is funny without meaning to be so, a liar and a cheat but also good hearted.

Oh, I love this! I am going to get a copy of Tortilla Flat today!Leoch wrote: ↑15 Sep 2013, 12:59 I love Mack, but my favorite is Sweets Ramirez, a minor character from from Tortilla Flat, who keeps up the pretense that she has electricity (a status symbol in that town), and when a suitor buys her an electric vacuum cleaner, she just pushes it over the floor while humming to herself.
