Do you know any authors?

Post by cooltodd »

Do you know any authors? Have you ever? Are you an author?

Do authors have a unique personality? What personal characteristics are common in an author?

What books have you (or your acquaintances) written?

You ask great :?: :?: I'll try to answer them in chronological order, I guess:
1. Yes, I know several authors.
2. Yes, I am also an author.
3. Unique personality?! Hmmm . . . I find authors generally shy - maybe shy isn't the right word - "comfortable" with extended alone time might be more accurate, yet great observer of their/our environment.
4. I've written several children's books, yet unpublished. Although, I've written several articles and poems published in various venues. A couple acquaitances have wonderful books published in children's titles, such as "Aunt Hilarity's Bustle" and "Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots".

Why are we asking these provocative :?: :?: 8)

I am an author of a novel called In Yahweh's Hands and it is on amazon, barnes and noble etc. I have two other novels coming out soon and also a cookbook. I don't have a shy bone in my entire body and haven't met anyone yet that I haven't been able to chat with with no problem. I will admit I can be moody, at times a little bit of a snot, pushy and annoying and yah, I have to have my periods of alone time or I swear I will just snap. I need time to relax, to think, to plan my next moves and get away from all things that bug me even if it means family friends or neighbors. I write horror novels, suspense and I applaud anyone who can write childrens books. Word out there to anyone who writes childrens books. My granddaughter is two and is deaf and guess what there are no books at the libraries in my area that help with trying to teach other children or even adults what it is like being deaf or hearing impaired from a childs point of view and everything else is outdated. Before you wonder how old I am, I'm 44 and yah I have one grandchild. It's just an idea I had about writing about deafness from a childs perspective but I don't have the slightest idea of how to write a childrens book so I thought I'd put the idea out there to those of you who do.

I know a few fiction authors and am married to one. I find that they put on a good front but underneath are loners. It is not an easy life. I see how much my husband agonizes over every word he writes. He takes any criticism very personally, but compliments he dismisses as people being kind.

I am not an author. Maybe I will be one day. I have never met any other authors, but I would like to start a support group in my area. I am sort of shy and moody. I enjoy learning about everything. I can find interest in the smallest things. I was at the Girls Scouts hut, and I enjoyed viewing all the artifacts on the wall. Each one has a story to be told. There's so much information out there to be written or rewritten to be learned again by a younger generation.

I know a picture book author, Narelle Oliver, through work. She has done a lot of work with us, and we commissioned her to write a book for us that the children's area in our beautiful new library is themed on.

Oh and it seems the husband of a friend and colleague of mine is now published. But I haven't read his book yet.

I know a lot of authors, having been through an MFA in Creative Writing.

I'd say the number one trait they all share is a preference to one on one or small group conversation. Get too many people together (unless they're all writers) and the writer will back away from center stage.

Some more than others.

I know a few aspiring authors, but I do not know any famous authors or anything like that.

Yes, quite a number of them...through various writing sites I frequent.
Are you an author?
I try to be...my actual status as an author is always up for debate.
Do authors have a unique personality? What personal characteristics are common in an author?
I don't think all authors share common characteristics, though there are some personality traits which are regularly displayed by many of them (but not all).
What books have you (or your acquaintances) written?
I've written two books, one of which is coming out next year through a small press in Canada, and a third in the works.

My closest personal acquaintances have written a number of books in both the mystery and general fiction genre. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the ones I've picked up so far and recommend them when I can.

My daughter owns a magazine of cultural criticism, organizes poetic festivals, book presentations, works as a curator in a picture gallery etc. My wife is proofreading the magazine, I sometimes help her a little bit or translate materials for the gallery. Through this activity I'm close with a whole bunch of fiction authors, poets, painters, journalists and other figures of this milieu. The fiction folks are quite normal guys, we often booze in company and discuss everything, I may only cite one from the company who has a serious and dignified look, but he is otherwise quite social. The majority of those I know are mainstream writers and a couple are fantasy authors. The poets, which are more numerous, are, of course, mainly "crazy" and have their quirks but I hit it off with them, the more so because I sometimes also write a verse or two myself :).

I know a fair few Indie Authors and am a short story writer - working on my first novel - so time will tell with me!
The author Nicholas Evans, of The Horse Whisperer lives near me, and friends have met him - I have not! I would love to meet Mitch Albom - and perhaps I will one day...

I recently went to a book signing in my neighborhood and met the author of What We've Lost is Nothing, Rachel Louise Snyder. It was my first book signing and it was surreal. I She gave an interview on a radio station I listen to in the mornings called WBEZ. She was on the morning shift talking to Tony Sarabia, and Snyder talked about her book so emphatically, I quickly downloaded it on my kindle. At the book signing she was so approachable. She wasn't the pretentious type like some authors can be. She even cursed, and talked about her daughter. Snyder even signed my kindle cover, and told me to keep writing, and that she liked my hair! An awesome woman!

My friend, Kacey Vanderkaar, just published her first book Antithesis. I loved this book. It's a young adult novel about this girl named Gavyn. Gavyn is the perfect quirky, relatable character. She was born with only 1 arm, but that does not stop her from becoming a complete badass.

The book is full of parallel universes, teleportation, war, and has some romance thrown in there. It doesn't take long for the book to get going, either. Within the first couple of chapters the action begins and totally sucks you in.

I am a frustrated author/illustrator...whole bunch of transcripts for children's books but lack the time and inclination to do anything with them. I know I could write for adults too. It's just that the area we live in while being on top of New York publishing houses also requires working two or three jobs to stay above water.

My cousin is a published author. He's written a series of Christian themed mystery books. Not to my taste in the least but he keeps churning them out...hey, with young kids and a full time job that's commendable. I don't think you can exactly pigeon hole authors into a specific personality.

I have noticed one similarity among many well written people. Some of the best writers are kind of awkward in speaking. Not always of course, but for me the written word flows much more readily than conversation. I have to know people well to open up. Then again I work with the public, you find your "game voice". :D
" The writer must write what he has to say, not speak it."
