James Paterson: crime writer or romantic novelist?

Paterson is one of my ultimate favorite authors, but I'm conflicted of whether to read his more prominent thrillers or stick to my usual romantic fiction novels he writes. I know he is undoubtedly known for his crime books and not his romantic ones but they were initially the first ones I picked up at the library and Ive been hooked on then ever since. "Suzanne's diary for Nicholas" had me hysterically crying by the end and "breakfast at Tiffany's" epitomized what I want in a relationship but do I take that step and read his more aggressive side? I'm scared it will ruin the image I have of him as a romance writer; so I'm asking any Paterson fans (of both types of books!) what should I do?!
