Has anyone read any of Tony Hillerman's books? If so tell me what you think. He writes Mysteries that are set on a Navajo Indian Reservation and his main characters are Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn. I like his books he's very discriptive when he talks about the Az desert and the surrounding towns.

I've read a number of his books, and enjoyed them very much. Both the settings and the culture are so far removed from my own experiences but his stories have a way of absorbing the reader. I particularly enjoy his portrayal of the supernatural.

Mr. Hillerman died recently, so no more Jim Chee or Joe Leaphorn. I guess I'll have to start rereading the series from the beginning.

Yeah I read that somewhere that he died, but I'm pretty sure he must have some more manuscripts written. That's what Louis Lamour did when he died he had alot of manuscripts written and his family published them.

I sure hope you're right Shaybo! I guess time will tell.

Tony Hillerman's Navajo Mystery series is one of my favorites. Hillerman had an amazing gift for conveying depth and nuance with simple, spare prose that matched the desert settings perfectly. I haven't read every book in the series, but I plan to. Wonderfully immersive stories!

I have read a few of his novels, and I have enjoyed all of them – easy reading and entertaining. He seemed to bring a sense of the Southwest desert to the reader. I think I can understand his love of the area and its people.

I always admired Tony Hillerman. Living in the Southwest does help me to be able to identify with his writing. I met his daughter this summer, so that was a treat. She is continuing with the series her father began. Between her writing and her husband's photography, they have been successful in their efforts to continue her father's work. She is under contract for more books about Chee, Manuelito and Leaphorn.
