I've recently embarked on rereading classic fairy tales. Do you prefer Andersen or Grimm, and which stories are your favorite?

The Grimm Brothers, but that is only because I once lived on Bruder Grimm Strasse in Hanau, Germany. There was a statue of the brothers (one sitting and one standing) in the market place square. Legend has it that at midnight on New Year's Eve, they change places. I never got around to finding out if the legend was true.

What an incredible experience! If I'm ever in Hanau, I'll have to try to go on New Year's Eve.

I grew up reading both and can't pick a favorite. They both are very different authors, but I really enjoy their stories. I'd say do yourself a favor and read both!

I enjoy reading fairy tales in general, but I think that I have a slight preference for the Brothers Grimm because their stories are the ones that I remember from my childhood. I didn't really become familiar with Hans Christian Andersen until I was in my teens.
When I was a little girl, my absolute favorite fairy tale was Cinderella. Recently, I came across a drawing of Snow White and Rose Red, and I've reacquainted myself with that story. Presently, I have some ideas knocking around in my brain for a short story centered around the two sisters.

For a newcomer, I recommend alternating between the two! I think the Grimm tales are a little more (forgive me) grim, while Andersen's are more uplifting. They are both magical in their own ways!

Neither.. lol. Fairytales are realllllllyyyy hard for me to read, its something to do with the lack of details, i like really descriptive writing and folktales or pulpfiction are both tough for me.
But i have read some of each and i think Hans Christian Anderson is better because it is more detailed and story-like than the Grimms stuff.
For Anderson i've read the Little Mermaid and The Snow Queen both pretty good although the Little Mermaid may be the most depressing story i've ever read lol .
For Grimm i've tried Sweetheart Roland and The Six Servants (which i'm convinced is the origin of the X-Men

).
Oh if you are going to read Grimms tales you could try the Charles Perrault versions instead, a lot of them are the same tales but Perrault tells them better.
And of course there are other collections of folktales apart from the Grimms and Anderson, such as the Bible or the Arabian Nights. The Seven Voyages of Sindbad are amazing! This is NOT the Sindbad from the films

.

Hans Christian Anderson. Though I really like the Grimm brothers, I have to go with Hans on this one with his super-engaging stories. They are such a treat to read!

Grimm Brothers for the shear wealth of stories, but Anderson for more deeply engaging stories.

I don't think I could pick a favorite. They are both great story tellers, if a little morbid and creepy sometimes.

I mostly read Grimm Brothers but I do also find most of their stories to be a bit Grimm. I should check out more of Andersen's stuff.

Both. Both is good. I can't choose a favorite of the two, but my favorite story is cleaver Hans by Brothers Grimm, simply because it is so weird and silly. I also love Cat Skin (sometimes called Donkey Skin/Beast Skin Etc.) But both authors have their strengths and I would strongly suggest reading both
