Vargas LLosa in the New Yorker

Post by RobC »

The New Yorker (March 16 2015 issue) as a good article about Maria Vargas Llosa, for those who are interested. The article covers his life, lived against the background of Peru's difficult political history. The article goes through his various novels. His latest is "The Discreet Hero", published this month.

One passage struck me. Vargas Llosa is quoted about the process of writing a novel:

In a primer on writing with the Rilkean title “Letters to a Young Novelist” (1997), Vargas Llosa describes the composition of fiction as a “backwards striptease,” in which an author puts imaginative garments onto the naked autobiographical basis of his every production.

I've never thought of it like that before--though it does make a kind of sense.

I have read all of The Kingdom Series, I loved them all. I am a huge fairytale fan and a romance reader. The two combined were amazing. The first three of her books are free if you have kindle. She is actually going to be writing a new series under a new pen name Jovee Winters. The next series is about the Queens. Super excited and can't wait to read the next part of the series! Hope you enjoy them as much as I have.
