Is Franz Kafka one of our best prose artists?

I have heard from various and redoubtable professors and critics who have called Kafka one of the best prose writers of the 20th century. I am a reader of English and am wondering, is Kafka translated or did he write in English? I do plan on diving into his body of work with great enthusiasm. I just want want to know if these reviews of Kafka are correct? I love Cormac McCarthy, that is prose writing at its finest. Will Kafka hit strike the same notes in me?
