Does anyone read classical literature any more?

Post by Zupanatural »

For years I only read the classics (Dickens, Hardy, Conrad etc.) and I was wondering how many people do that nowadays. Also, who would go down as your favourite classical literature author?

Poe & Maupassant are two of mine and today I'm going to say Poe is the winner. Maupassant's turn tomorrow... :D

I read some Plato (really old classic). I'm currently reading Kafka's The Trial. I like the absurdities in his stories.

Yes, I do read classical literature. It does enhance my English and I find it very enriching.

I love classical literature! I own several books and sometimes I just feel the need for one of them. They almost reset my reading. Sometimes you can get so caught up in a series or type of book that you need a break. When that happens I love to pick up one and read it.

I have to admit I haven't read much Dickens and find him a bit heavy going. But in general, I do read and greatly appreciate classics. I love Hardy, Shakespeare, the Bronte sisters and Austen.

I have read Jane Austen books, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, I know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Beowolf, Frankenstein, and Jane Eyre. I have probably read more, but I can't think of their names. Jane Austen is my favorite classical author. Out of this list Frankenstein and Jane Eyre were my favorites and I know Why the Caged Bird Sings was my least favorite. I don't know if Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys count as classical literature, possibly not, but I have read a lot of those.

Yes I read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a month ago. That wasn't my first read though. It is the third time I have read the book. My recent was to help my junior sister with her coursework and I do enjoy it every time I read it. The film adaptation isn't bad either, stars Leonardo DiCaprio

I am currently reading Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens, it is my first classic, and I am not sure how I feel about it.

I used to read classics way more than I do now. I still hold them near and dear to my heart though! Fitzgerald is one of my favorite authors ever and I read Gatsby at least twice a year. Some other favorites: Oscar Wilde, George Orwell, and Mark Twain. I also read Gone with the Wind on a yearly basis. I have a bad habit of reading things over and over again.

I have read some, but sadly not as many as I'd like.
It seems like I always have in mind that I want to read them, but something else will jump out at me and I'll grab a new release thriller or mystery.

I still love reading classics. I'm currently halfway through Pride and Prejudice after giving up on it in high school when it was assigned.

I've never read classical literature exclusively, but I do read it regularly. Particular favorites are Dostoyevsky, Bronte, Austen, and Dumas.

I'm guessing half of what I read is either a classic or buy an author who is considered to have written a classic. Edith Wharton and Henry James are a couple of my favorites. I enjoy a good thriller though too!
