Jim Butcher was a guest author at a sci fi convention, Polaris, near where I live and I thought I might as well see what he was about so I picked up the first book in his Dresden series.

Didn't actually read the book until months after the convention but once I got around to it I found it was a good read, nice tight writing, good action scenes, in all nicely done. I picked up the rest of the series and read them all. Really enjoyable series. I was sucked in and totally onside watching the life of a wizard living in Chicago.

Once I finished with Dresden, I picked up "The Furies of Calderon" which is the first book in Butcher's Codex Alera series. I won't be reading the rest. "Furies" was utterly predictable, I didn't care about the characters and I found that the writing dragged. It just went on and on. ugh. I gave up actually reading and started skipping paragraphs, then pages, then whole chapters and it really didn't matter because yeah, I got it. Seen it before. Checked it off. got the t-shirt. meh.

Thumb down on Codex Alera but a big Thumb Up for Dresden. I can't wait for the next one!

I haven't read any of the Furies series because it didn't really interest. But I love the Dresdan Files. The writing is really good, the characters are awesome, there's lots of action, and a bit of humour. I'm really enjoying that series.
