Anyone heard of him or better yet read anything?

I'm reading his first book Sister Carrie. The writing is intelligent with social commentary and the story is somewhat radical for the time it was written.

He seems to be fading fast into obscurity.

Yeah I think you're right he seems to have been highly regarded at one time which makes me wonder why no one has heard of him now. I guess if you don't have a blockbuster on the Times bestseller list or a book about romantic vampires or kids flying around on brooms it's just not interesting enough to read. Oh well.

He is a good writer and it is felt that all his stories are real and we see the tragedy of common people with their worries and cares.I have read Jenny many times and I like it more than all the other books.

Dreiser is a major novelist whose themes resemble those of Dickens. However, the sentimentalism and melodrama we associate with the Dickensian works is replaced by a realistic and pragmatic outlook and the relentless overpowering of the old world by an emerging industrial world dominated by commercial values. His best novel "An American Tragedy"presents a clash between these value systems.
