I read on average about 6 - 8 books a month and have been doing so for more than a decade and I've found favorite books rather than favorite authors. I love the writing of Chuck Palahniuk, but many of his books are so scattered when it comes to plot that you just have to enjoy the writing and the witty things he says without looking for a solid, supporting plot. Laurell K. Hamilton is an excellent author, but in her ninth book she got so sexually graphic I felt myself blushing and wanting to hurry past the pages, and I am not one to get offended or embarrassed by anything. Craig Davidson wrote an incredible book, Fighter, but I haven't read anything else he's written, and Oleg Steinhauer put out one of the best espionage books I've read in decades--The Tourist, but then again, Robert Ludlum was the master at writing espionage. I think every author who writes long enough has hits and misses, so I think I'll go back to thebooks I've read more than once: Nicholas Sparks' book, The Notebook, was a simple beautiful story--his first, and I love Chuck Palahniuk's first novel Fight Club. Then again, I'm reading Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet and that is an incredibly well written and convincing novel with great pacing, memorable characters and a moving storyline, so I'll be buying more of his work, too.
