I have heard of all of them besides Robert Bloch, but I'm interested in looking at some of his literature.
Lovecraft is one of my favourite authors, especially the Macabre Series.

I'm thinking that Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley oughta be in there, too.
Also there's William Peter Blatty, Shirley Jackson, and Robert Bloch.

Something Wicked This Way Comes certainly qualifies, too.

I think there are so few true "horror" writers because people tend to confuse horror with "gore", horror comes mostly from psychological and the unknown conditions that the human mind puts us in. Edger Allen Poe, perfect horror, not many people can touch that and actually be coming up with something original.

I would recomend to anyone John Harwood, particularyl his book "the seance". It's the best of all, in my eye.

Thanks for this list! I quite enjoy Sheridan Le Fanu. I have most of his work with me and read them when I need to relax from schoolwork.

His book THE OCTOBER COUNTRY is an excellent early collection of horror stories which, while not overtly traditional in their horrific themes, still scared the crap out of me. "The Skeleton" is a perfect example of this. Ray Bradbury is and always will be my favorite writer.

Those are all really good authors. My favorite of all of them is Edgar Allan Poe. That man had a way with words when it came to his stories and poems. I was so creeped out by them, but could not muster up the will to put the stories down.
