Review of Starting Over in Sedona
Starting Over in Sedona by Lynne M. Spreen is a romance novel that follows the life of Susan ‘Sue’ Weston, a 65-year-old widow. Sue had been estranged from her elder sister, Roseanne, for many years, so it shocked her when she received an email from her sister saying she was dying. Sue still resented Roseanne over their mother gifting their old mansion (the Mesa) in Sedona to Roseanne, who was the black sheep of the family. However, with the news of Roseanne dying, Sue returns to Sedona, hopeful for a reconciliation and a chance to finally live in her beloved family home. Unfortunately, Sue finds out that her sister isn’t done with her antics, as she does one final act before exiting the world: leaving the Mesa to both Susan and a real estate developer, Rafe, who wants nothing more than to sell the property and cash out.
This book was a warm and cosy read. I love romance novels, and when I saw that the main protagonists were over 60, I was very intrigued. It’s rare to see mature main characters in a romance novel. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was, and I think the author has something here targeting this age group. I really enjoyed the story, and it was quite a refreshing take on the typical romance novels.
Sue was a great and strong character. She embodied the sentiment that age is just a number; she certainly didn’t let it stop her from going after her dreams. I felt her frustration, anger, and resentment that her mother had willed the Mesa to Roseanne, who had caused the family so much pain. The fact that she risked losing it all over again to a stranger (due to Roseanne) only added insult to injury.
The only issue I had was that the author spent an inordinate amount of time on Sue’s backstory. At first, I understood she wanted to lay the base for the book, but it got repetitive reading over again about how Sue lost her husband, how they had moved around a lot while married, and how she was alone because her kids were far away. I became very impatient with this and just wanted to get to the book’s main point.
Besides the above issue, I enjoyed this book and found it to be a very easy read. I quickly got over the problem I mentioned because once the main plot started, it was smooth sailing ahead. It was also flawlessly edited, as I did not find any errors. As a result, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I’ll recommend it to romance fans looking for a quick, easy, and cosy read.
