Jasmine in Bloom by Londa Hayden is a book that contains two stories: one set in the 1700s and one in modern times. The historical tale features Constance, a landowner's daughter, and her maidservent, Jasmine. Both fall in love with the same man, an indentured servant, though Constance knows she can never be with him due to the racial issues of the time. Flash forward to the present, and Nicole, a biracial girl, falls in love with the son of a KKK member. Their romance seems equally forbidden. Will Nicole, Constance, or Jasmine get their happy endings, or will society keep them from the ones they love?

One of the unique parts of this book was the blend of a historical tale with a modern-day one. As Nicole began research for a school project on her heritage, the connection between the two became clearer. A complicated history was revealed, and I found it fascinating. One choice that was made during Constance's life created ripples that were being discovered generations later. The two storylines also highlight how racial prejudice is not something of the past. It is very much still an issue in today's society.

The one part of this book that I disliked was the descriptions. I felt as though Hayden could have provided a slightly better level of detail for settings and general descriptions. At times, it felt as though the action and dialogue overpowered the descriptions.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. Other than the lack of detailed descriptions, there was nothing else I disliked about this book. The overall plot and characters were interesting, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The book also appears to be professionally edited. The book does have some discussion of Christian values, but I still believe that it is suitable for those of any background, given they have an open mind to differing ideas. Those who are looking for a fun blend of romance, historical fiction, and a book that addresses social issues would enjoy this book. It is suitable for older teens along with adults. It is well worth reading!

I wish I knew what happened to Constance and Nicole. Did they get what their heart desire? My tiny guess or humongous guess is that at least one love went unanswered. hmm.
