A Song for Bijou by Josh Farrar
I, personally, recommend this book because of its relations to current young love. Seventh graders, especially, have a tendency to get into relationships by breaking the rules and learning about a person. They very much want to get really close to their crush all the time. The thoughts of the main characters, Alex and Bijou, vary upon chapter, making the reader understand each of their feelings and emotions. Middle school students should just take their time to read something that relates to their current life.
My favorite character of this book was Ira. Ira is the awkward best friend of Alex and Nomura. He walks around with a video camera and catching clips of embarrassing moments people nearby have. From these actions, the climax takes a steep turn point from his video clips. Throughout the novel, though, Alex pushes him away because he believes Ira isn't cool and has to stop being weird.
In this book (and in every book), there are the pros and cons. "A Song for Bijou" gave a reasonable level of vocabulary to the readers. To understand the tone of the author a little better, French phrases were added in dialogue. Facts about Haiti were given to interpret why certain actions and reactions occurred between characters. Even though this was a lovely story, it could have fixed some minor issues. To me, the thoughts of Bijou changed more often than I could read. The ending should of given some more of the writing for better inference.
The quantity of pages are fair for an average reader. Readers who like a good realistic fiction are sure to enjoy this novel. Josh Farrar should receive some credibility for his work because it widens the soul on everyday life. Tweens who are desperate for a simple but pleasant novel about first love should take the time to read this. Thank you for reading my review. I hope this has given you the greater urge to read "A Song for Bijou."
