Photographer Ollie is attacked by a rioter at the US Capitol in 2021 but he doesn’t recognise the masked female assailant. Fury in Her Eyes follows Ollie’s ordeal and the trauma takes him back to 1986. Throughout the book, Ollie doesn’t hide his emotions and feelings from readers, giving them insight into his suffering and his present friendship and family.

Fury in Her Eyes is an action-packed story filled with romance and suspense. There are plenty of characters that Ollie encounters that help him with his healing journey – both mentally and physically. Fury in Her Eyes shows the whole story: Ollie’s attack, his 1986 memories, and the justice system. This provides readers with the overall story in the hopes of identifying who the attacker was in 2021. In addition, the accents for the French words are correctly used, which is personally gratifying.

There is a back-and-forth between the past and present, making this a complex and nonlinear narrative. So, while this is a lengthy read, it helps to read the book in one sitting – or at least as closely as possible – in order to navigate the narrative easily. Furthermore, the story is pronoun-heavy, so it is often difficult to grasp who ‘he’ or ‘she’ is, and the narration is stiff. Vega includes a lot of dialogue in the book and action tags so it reads as static; at times this works because it sets the pace of the scenes, but this can be dissonant in other areas as they don’t provide a cohesive or visual story.

I rate this book 2 out of 5 stars. The book loses so many stars because Fury in Her Eyes is a mature read, featuring plenty of strong language. Moreover, Fury in Her Eyes focuses on the romance aspect as opposed to the investigation, which is often side-tracked. This book is ideal for readers who can appreciate the fast-paced stories and follow complex narratives. Due to the pacing of the writing style, this helps readers to stick to the narrative in order to read in one sitting.

The event triggers painful memories from his past in 1986, forcing him to confront both his emotional and physical scars. As Ollie embarks on a healing journey, the story blends action, romance, and suspense, with a focus on the relationships that support him through his struggles. The novel also weaves a mystery around the identity of his attacker, offering a compelling look at justice and the complexities of healing.
