Review of The Cackling of the Crows
The Cackling of the Crows by Neal Sellers is about a guy named Gregory Que sharing his experiences with the most important women in his life, sharing the wisdom he’s learned about women as it becomes relevant to the plot.
The author’s writing style in this book is unique in the fact that Que appears to be talking to the reader, breaking the fourth wall in a way that should not, but does, work very well for Que. It is consistent and enjoyable to get into as it allows the reader to immerse themselves in the story and become invested. The book is very difficult to put down as the reader gets further and further into the story. Kiyy, Winnie, K.P. and Jinx, who are the four main female characters, are strong in a very real way that will resonate with those who have been through what they have.
I gave this book five out of five for its content. I liked how the tone of the book does feel respectful and very thoughtful, allowing both men and women a chance to understand each other a little better through Que. The story starts strong and stays strong throughout the book. It does seem to be fast-paced in its present moments, flipping back and forth from past to present to give the reader an in-depth perspective of Que’s life in the past and how it relates to what is happening in the present, but also slow enough for the readers to enjoy the story as it goes on. While I feel the ending can leave the reader wishing for more, it was also very satisfying to finish. I do recommend this book to adults who enjoy unconventional romance. While the editing wasn’t perfect, it was still well done.
The Cackling of the Crows does feel like a story that can offer whoever reads this insight into the minds of the opposite sex and does feel honestly respectful of women. The author did an amazing job with this book. It is worth it for the writing style alone. Those who read this book will not regret it!
