And Loi Cramer is no ordinary hostess. She is widow of the late Alexander Cramer, and heiress to the Cramer fortune. But life was not all that good when it all started. She hailed from the south side of Chicago, with a street-walking sister Ronnie, a heroin-addicted brother Cedric, and a part-time mother. The death of her mother when she was almost eighteen dramatically changed her life as she left the darkness of Chicago behind to seek her fortune in Atlanta, Georgia. The transformation from Eloise Jenkins to Loi and later Loi Cramer was swift and dramatic.
Doing Big Things by Gail McFarland is not only the rags-to-riches journey of Loi Cramer, but a story with a twist that will captivate and intrigue readers. Beautifully written with a flowing narrative that is not difficult to follow, the author has skillfully navigated a treacherous path by turning a simple enough story into a unique and charming one. Loi as the central character in the story is someone you will absolutely love to relate to.
Some of the other characters are also truly remarkable though they are secondary players in the whole scheme of things. A case in point is Ruby Singer. Her big heartedness and foresight made me applaud her. Another fascinating character is Ava Duncan, Loi’s true friend who stood by her for thirty long years through thick and thin. And of course, there is the lawyer, James Shaver!
Author Gail McFarland, who is known for her contemporary romance fiction, also has written several other gripping novels: When Love Calls, If Ever, Bouquet, Summer Wind, All For Love, Can a Sistah Get Some Love?, Wayward Dreams, Dream Runner and Dream Keeper. In addition to that, some of her short stories have been featured in a number of magazines as well as in anthologies. If you haven’t read her or loved her other books, you’ll certainly enjoy this one.
Rating the book is not a difficult one. You know that it is 2+ but giving it a rating of 4 would again tantamount to pulling your own legs. Hence, I would settle for 3 out of 4 which I believe is fair enough. I know you will enjoy this as much as I enjoyed it.
