What happens when one relationship ends and another one begins? Chaos. Cathlene Patterson is in an awful relationship with her recently successful writer/director of a boyfriend and wants out. In comes Nick Maxwell to save the day and set her on fire. Not literally. The main characters first meet at a party and are completely captivated with each other, him more than her. Cathlene knows he’s dangerous for her but she just can’t seem to resist the man who overpowers her senses and she knows they’re from different worlds. They can’t be any more different. She’s a hard-working girl, juggling two jobs and he’s a wealthy, arrogant but very success entrepreneur. She’s loyal, independent and spirited while he’s powerful and cynical about women due to them being attracted to his good looks and bank account. How can two people born into two completely different classes fall in love? Well, I haven’t quite gotten the answer to that in this book.

His Unquenchable Desire fails to hit the mark in my honest opinion. I’m no stranger to Alpha male characters who are used to getting what they want but not in the fashion that Nick has done. Hint hint: stalker alert. Funnily enough, I recently reviewed a book where the stalker is the antagonist but in this book, the stalker is the hero himself. Cathlene ends up having ‘chance’ encounters with Nick pretty much everywhere. Oh, and he begins to call her up even though she never gave the guy her number. Creepy? I think so.

Now Cathlene is struggling to pay off her debts by working two jobs -both of which were provided by her two sweet besties, Andy and Mimi, by the way- and Nick offers her a job working for him as his ‘personal’ assistant. Wow, way of being subtle. If that didn’t seem fishy to her, he baits her with the opportunity to work in the field she's always dreamed of and get this, she only shared that particular desire with only a very few select individuals that can be counted on one hand, even if you were lacking a finger or two. And none of them was Nick Maxwell. Stalker much? Point proven.

Various scenes show us that Nick is aggressively jealous, controlling and uses coercion and threats to get what he wants. Though the author did add a sympathetic backstory for Nick and Cathlene having trust issues, it was far too late and seemed kind of thrown in there instead of being subtly weaved or foreshadowed throughout the book. There is also a lack of a secondary plot so all we get is Cathlene ‘trying’ to fight off her attraction to Nick after a failed relationship and learning to trust him.

While the plot is pretty cliché, such as hard-working young woman with a difficult past meets a wealthy, handsome man who is more than what he seems, the fact that it was very clear in the beginning that Nick was stalking Cathlene and getting information on her from someone close to her and she already got the feeling that he was and yet, still lusted after him and turned a blind eye to his stalking made it a somewhat frustrating read. Any other person would have called the cops in like in Serenity Lost albeit that heroine’s stalker wasn’t just following her. I mean, which hero would feel entitled in telling the heroine who she can have as friends and who she can’t just because he hates the person?

I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars. While I’m certain that others might have different opinions of this book from me, I find that having a hero who fits the description of a couple of notable unsubs in Criminal Minds a little unsettling. I’m not asking for a hero to romance his heroine with sweet words and gestures but having one go around stalking her and controlling her and her life isn’t what I’m looking for either. Thinking her to be a materialistic, money-grabbing woman and offering her money to keep her with you isn’t exactly the way to a woman’s heart. Chasing away her best friend who has been by her side through tough times and who has helped her during tough times is pretty difficult to swallow when there’s really nothing substantial that makes you hate him. On a positive note however, I did love Andy, the heroine's best friend. He's a character I couldn't help but love. He was supportive, caring and would do just about anything for Cathlene despite their relationship being completely sibling-like. Sadly, even Andy wasn’t enough to turn this story around. This is a quick read for those who aren’t looking for much but for readers looking for something more substantial and engaging, you might want to move on.
