The Silver Cord tells the story about 2 single mothers, Kat and Jess, who recently bought a centuries old farm in Georgia with the intention to renovate and sell it. They discover that the farm not only has some old furniture and interesting paintings, but it also has the 300 year old spirit of a Scottish soldier, Donald MacIntosh.
Kat is the only one who can see, feel and communicate with the spirit. As Donald knows that Kat and Jess are witches, he asks Kat to help him. In the process of helping, Kat falls in love with the Scottish spirit. However, Kat is not fully certain if she can help him as she did not get the freedom to practice the craft for over more than a decade, due to the attitude of her late husband towards Wicca. Kat is also put in a dilemma as she needs to choose between her spiritual and her real life flesh-and-blood love interest. She also needs to balance life as a single mother, owner to a budding flipping house business and as an in-the-broom-closet witch in a conservative church going town.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars, because of the way this supernatural romance story unfolded itself naturally. It was also not predictable, even at times quite shockingly unexpected, such as Donald’s ties to the people in the present. The description of the rituals and the spells that Kat and Jess performed were not too drawn out in every detail and also not too dense. The spells gave a nice magical touch to the storyline and I much appreciated it as it is rather difficult to make poems that rhyme, which spells are on a grammatical level.
The story keeps you captivated and entertained right to the end, although the development of the relationship between Kat and her real flesh-and-blood love interest could have been more elaborated upon, especially on the level of their shared values and experiences. Also less detail could have been given about the renovations of the old farm.
The story is a good mix of the supernatural, especially regarding witchcraft, and romance. It will be much appreciated by romance novel readers who like their romantic stories in a supernatural setting. The title of the story refers to the concept that the soul is tethered to the body by a cord during astral travels. In the note about the author it is stated that the author is already working on two sequels to The Silver Cord. I am looking forward to these sequels, especially to what and how Kat will answer to an insightful question her daughter asked her about witches.
The Silver Cord was published by Champagne Books in June 2015.
