Official Review: Safe At Last by Maya Banks

Post by KellyS24 »

Safe At Last is the third book in the Slow Burn series featuring the second love romance of Zach and Gracie. The beginning caught my attention immediately and had me wondering just what these two had shared in their past together that pulled them apart for so many years. Zach and Gracie were high school sweethearts, destined to be together. Gracie was the one. Until one day she up and disappears from his life with no trace, like she never existed. Twelve years later he is still in love with her, unable to let her go, and still looking for her. One day, just like any other, Gracie unexpectedly shows up out of the blue and unwilling back into Zach's life.

Where has she been all these years? What happened to her and why? And why is she acting so different toward Zach? Their reunion was not how Zach had hoped for. Gracie is absolutely terrified of the man she used to be in love with and tries so very desperately to avoid him at all costs. And the most frustrating part is, that you DON'T KNOW WHY. It mad me so angry seeing how hard Zach tried to keep it together to get some answers and she just refused to tell him what happened and kept him in the dark, accusing him of things he was not even aware of. Like, JUST COME OUT AND SAY IT ALREADY, WOMAN!!!!! The suspense is so great that I could not put the book down until I learned the truth. And the truth is you spend a great deal of the book wondering what happened. I was almost as frustrated as Zach's character trying to figure it out because you spend half of the book being teased with all the possibilities of what could have possibly made Gracie so scared of Zach.

It lacked intimacy which surprised me since it's not what I have come to expect from a Maya Banks story so I was a little disappointed. I would have liked a little more romance between the two than sharing ONLY one intimate scene in the last chapter of the book. It's like the book has you experiencing the emotional dread and torture of these two lives that were torn apart only to share that one brief happiness at the end. Simply no balance to weigh out the good and bad. I think these two characters deserved to share so much more affection and happiness than they were given, especially after being separated under such circumstances for twelve years.

I did, however, appreciate the second chance romance element implemented in this book. An old fire rekindled after so much loss and pain, and it made me so glad they eventually found their happiness together. Zach had beautiful love and feelings for Gracie that I really enjoyed reading about. I love that he did all he could to get her back and that he did not give up no matter how difficult, frustrating, or challenging it was. And I respect, to the fullest, those qualities in men.

Overall, Safe at last was a decent story. Although the mystery behind what happened to Gracie and who was really responsible for it was easily predictable, it still kept me on my toes. This was a very enjoyable and emotional read.

Happy Reading everyone and enjoy :)
