Thank you BOTD for this review. Truth be told, it stills ones emotions; I came to empathise with Lily, her mother Maya and all other slaves whose children were taken away. I loathed Levi and the son Wyatt. Worse I loathed Levi's wife, for enjoying Lily being taken away and Maya being beaten by Levi's son. I would have expected her to empathise, to even intervene. May be as a reader I shouldn't have felt like this but I couldn't help it. The book and the review gives insights into historical slavery. Quite intense. Good review BOTD.

I'm in love with the book's cover! It absolutely pulled me in, and from this review, it appears that the plot is as engrossing as the cover is attractive. I wonder what possible relationship playing the piano has with committing "hideous crimes." There's only one way to find out, and I'm sure diving onto it!

Interesting review. It is sometimes refreshing to leave behind the politics of an era - in this case, slavery - an look at the individuals affected by it on personal levels.

She was sold at auction as a baby? That's cruel. I'd love to know the backstory behind this. Sounds like a great book.

Slaves playing the master’s piano was considered a hideous crime back then? Horrifying times! I wonder where Lily’s music will take her. Thank you for the insightful review.

I love historical fiction from many eras, but I get a little anxious when it comes to this particular time period due to the atrocities that we committed against people of color. Even an uplifting romance can’t keep me from being apprehensive about what they must have to overcome along the way. Still, it sounds well-written and not too cringeworthy, so I should give it a chance. Thank you for the helpful review.

I am not much of a fan of historical romance stories, so I'd most likely pass on this one. Great review, though! Also, congratulations to the author for BOTD!

The storyline does take you through a range of emotions. I've an inkling that the characters here bring life to the story. While historical genre is really not something I prefer to read, I may sample this one as the characters are fascinating.

I am reading this book right now and am loving reading it because it is such an absorbing book with many details. I also am loving the soul mate type of relationship between James and Lilly. I don't notice any switching of the dialects between James and Lilly's characters, and both seem to have typical southern United States speech patterns to me. I am looking forward to the conclusion. I hope it involves James and Lilly ending up together. They really seem like they are meant to be together.
