Growing up as someone who is mixed in the 20th century could not have been easy; many more challenges and questions would have risen. How does Patricia handle it? Will she be able to reach her goals, despite what society says? Thanks for the review!

It's so intriguing to see other perspectives of this work. Personally, I found the book very difficult to make it through with the way it was written and the intense portions. I gave it a much lower rating. It was interesting to learn so much history through those characters, though I thought they sounded too much like they were just spewing facts out of a textbook. As for the relationship content, that is quite triggering for many people, even with the red flags at the very beginning. It should probably have a warning for the intense scenes.

"Deceptive Calm" by Patricia Skipper is a powerful and vividly written novel exploring themes of love, racism, and identity in 20th-century America. With its well-developed characters and historical context, it's a compelling read. 5/5 stars!

I'm very much interested in the story of Vanessa and all she had to go through because of the color of her skin, or where she come from.

A romance fiction laced with historical accounts revolving around the timeless issue of racism and gender bias excellently portrays "Deceptive Calm" by Patricia Skipper. The book is set in 20th-century America and follows the life of a young orphan raised in an orphanage by a nun, Sister Rosalie.
I love historical books, and I think Patricia's book will make a perfect weekend read.

Vanessa's journey through dearest, racial challenges, and societal expectations in 20th-century America is drawn in Patricia Skipper's Deceptive Calm. Because of the numerous obstacles, she must have the best as a Sinister woman, this diachronic tale is compelling and thought-provoking.

'Like every young girl, Vanessa fell in love with Barry, whom she had schooled with. Their relationship, built on the foundation of love, led them down paths neither had ever imagined.'
Barry messed up real good.

Deceptive Calm is a story filled with love, betrayal and revenge etc.. Though, the first person point of view for the book is good but it's written in a skilled way of the author. Actually, what I meant to say is that the author uses a first person point of view in a literally way to express what is really happening around him/her. :tiphat:

I didn't really enjoy this book. I thought there wasn't enough characterization. When I was reading, I felt like I could care less about the characters because they weren't really fleshed out.

Regardless, glad you enjoyed it. Nice review.

Your review does a great job of highlighting the depth of Deceptive Calm. I find it fascinating how Patricia Skipper intertwines historical elements with a personal narrative, especially through Vanessa’s struggles as a mulatto in 20th-century America. The themes of racial tension, gender bias, and abusive relationships seem to add layers of realism to the story, making it more than just a romance. I also appreciate that you pointed out the use of cliffhangers to emphasize the dangers of segregation—this sounds like a compelling storytelling technique. The book’s mature themes make me wonder how deeply it explores these societal issues. Thanks for such a detailed and insightful review!

"Deceptive Calm" by Patricia Skipper is a book whose plot is set in the second half of the 20th century while the protagonist is a young mulatto girl Vanessa. Vanessa will fall in love with young Barry, but their love will last.

Whoa- This review beautifully captures the depth of Deceptive Calm! I love how Patricia Skipper weaves historical struggles into Vanessa’s personal journey. The themes of racial tension, gender bias, and love’s complexities make this book sound like an emotional rollercoaster. Your mention of the cliffhangers and vivid descriptions has definitely piqued my interest. Adding this to my reading list!
