One Way or Another by Mary J. Williams is a modern day fairytale that explores many themes of contemporary love, family drama, and complicated relationships. At the heart of the novel is a story of the Benedict sisters Calder, Bryce, Destry, and Andy. The Benedict sisters are beautiful, successful and wealthy. The four sisters share an unbreakable bond despite the fact they all have different fathers, even Calder, and her twin Bryce. For her entire life, Calder lacked a respectable male role model that she could trust. She lost faith in long term relationships as a result of witnessing her mother’s dysfunctional relationships. Calder’s motto was “hope for the best, expect the worst,” so when Calder met Adam Stone, a stunningly handsome businessman she wondered if she could trust him.

One strength of the book lies in the author's portrayal of strong, compelling, beautiful women characters. The characters were well developed and I love that although the women were born rich, they were not lazy and entitled but instead were driven to succeed and build their own legacies. For example, when Calder describes her sister Andy, a high demand fashion designer, she says that Andy believed that “brains trumped beauty every time.” I think this sends a powerful message that women do not have to be merely a pretty face, but can and should seek to learn, grow and succeed using their minds.

Calden described her twin sister Bryce as turning her love of reading into a successful writing career. I love the subtle inspiration that, as a woman, you can take your greatest passions and turn them into a viable business opportunity. Calden described Destry as full of energy and unable to stay in one place too long. I can relate to this character in that I have so many passions and interests that I sometimes struggle with staying focused on one project or activity for too long. The different personalities and career paths highlight the notion that there is not a single approach to success.

Mary J. Williams voice is captivating and genuine. The author paints an exquisite picture of Adam and Calder’s relationship. I applaud the author for her ability to weave together a steamy, yet tasteful love story with authenticity. She captures the essence of the pain, chaos and confusion can accompany relationships. What I did not like about the book was the one-word sentences and the repeating of words and phrases for emphasis.

I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars because I was sorry to see the story end and I am excited to know there are other stories in the series. I recommend this book for teen girls ages 16 and up and women of all ages.

I reviewed this book as well and thought it was excellent! I am actually in the process of reading the whole series. The Benedict sisters are very interesting, and I am enjoying each of their stories. Great job on the review!
All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts

I’m in the process of reading it now so that I can review it as well. I love their relationship and the fact that they had their own safe haven I’m the form of their special sister room. No one was allowed in there not even to clean that was their sanctuary. I also love that even though their mom wasn’t a mom the still had a mom in the families cook. It just showed that money can’t always provide true happiness. Great review!
