I think that every girl dreams of one day finding their perfect soul mate. The one that has all the same interests as you, and who makes you feel like you were meant to be together. Looking Glass Friends by E.L. Neve is a perfect example of just that. It was a beautifully written fictional novel of a man and a woman married to other people, and not realizing how unhappy they were until they met each other.
Ellie, who is marries to Jake, and together they have a 5 year old son named Johnny. Jake is a very wealthy businessman, and Ellie stays at home with their son and doesn't have to work. They drive nice cars and live in a big house. You would think Ellie was happy living the perfect life, but then she meets Neil for the first time at the bakery. Ellie realizes for the first time that money doesn't always buy you happiness. Neil, who is married to Fay, and just trying to survive life, meets Ellie and sparks fly. To quote Neil, "When I discovered you, I realized for the first time that to live alone without experiencing the reverence of love was the essence of a wasted life." Their relationships forms through letters and emails and eventually they both feel their soul mate is each other.
I loved this book because it made me look at my own life and marriage in a different light. It made me realize the things I have in common with my husband and everything he does for me and our family. Through the years that gets lost, and it is nice to be reminded of that. The characters were very relatable and it made me want to continue reading, and not wanting it to ever end.
The one thing I did not like about this book was that one of the things Ellie and Neil had in common was their love for poetry, and famous poets like Keats and Henley. They were always quoting pieces of poetry, and because I don't love poetry, it was hard to understand. Ellie and Neil found each other intellectually stimulating because of the love of poetry they both had among other things.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was a wonderfully romantic love story and I was always left wanting more. Even though it was over 400 pages, it flowed smoothly, and definitely didn't feel like it took forever to finish. Does Ellie and Neil come together, and become the soul mates they were meant to be? You will just have to read the book to find out.
