The book One Way or Another written by Mary J. Williams is a book about Calder Benedict, a girl who is one of the four Benedict sisters. Although Calder and her sisters are a part of the wealthy and elite, the sisters are not too spoiled and are seemingly down to earth. They all work hard in their diverse careers. Calder herself works for her Charity and is very successful in her own right. The one thing she is not successful in, however, is finding the right man. That is until she meets Adam Stone, someone who is hardworking and does not seem to be interested in her wealth.
The Benedict women were born into a wealthy family in which only sons would inherit the estate, but so far, there have only been girls that were born. This does make them all vulnerable to fortune hunters of all kinds. When Adam liberates Calder from a creepy date, he questions her taste in men, which promptly puts Calder off. However, each time they bump into each other, their attraction grows more in-depth with each meeting. Unfortunately, Calder has trust issues, and Adam is not looking for love, but that does not stop the romance that blossoms between them. Various obstacles are thrown in their path that test the bounds of their fledgling relationship, which makes Calder question whether Adam is the love of her life, or if she will be burned again.
What I liked, and what continued to keep me interested throughout the book, were the subplots that were a part of the storyline. For a while, I thought the overall plotline was excellent and robust; it was not enough on its own to keep me interested. The little extra twists and turns kept me reading and wanting to know what happens next.
Throughout the book, it shows that the four Benedict sisters have formed a bond that is both nurtured and loving. They enjoy being together, which helps them each get through the ups and downs that life happens to throw at them, which is frequently at the hands of their mother. They are very loyal to each other, which is another added depth to the book that I enjoyed. However, what I disliked about the book was that the plot was a bit typical and was not anything original. You knew who the bad guys were, and you knew who the good guys were.
I would classify this book as a contemporary romance. I think it would appeal to an audience who likes the type of romance where the two main characters are on the same page for the majority of the story. The main characters do have a physical relationship early on in the book, and while the love scenes are not insanely graphic, the reader can definitely tell what occurred. In the romance category, I would give this book 5/5 stars. The reason for this rating was because it was a story that I could not put down, and it made me eagerly anticipate reading the other three sister’s stories. This book was well written, and you could tell it went through an editor, for I couldn’t many grammar or spelling mistakes, therefore I would give it 4/4 stars for editing.
