One Way or Another by Mary J. William is the first book in The Sisters Quartet series. This particular book focused on Calder Benedict, one of the four daughters of Billie Benedict. The four sisters - Andi, Calder, Bryce, and Destry - had only one parent in common. They all came from different men. There was a rare case of Calder and her twin, Bryce, being fathered by different men. In the midst of all these, the sisters formed a bond that their parentage couldn't break.
As a young and successful lady, Calder had one major problem. It was difficult to find a man who truly loved her. The men she had been with either came for her fortune, body, or both. This was one of the disadvantages she had for bearing the Benedict name. After breaking up with Milo Prendergast, she found herself falling head over heels with Adam Stone. Though Adam displayed somewhat questionable attributes, she found herself attracted to him in a way she had never been to any other man she had met. They tried flirting with each other in order to deny the obvious. When they couldn't hold up the charade, they let themselves fall in love with each other. Their relationship didn't sit well with Ingo Hunter, Billie's boyfriend. He had his eye on the inheritance left by Calder's grandfather. With the help of Edwin, Calder's father, Ingo set Adam up. Calder and Adam's relationship went through a severe test. Would their love survive? Would Ingo succeed in his quest to take over the Benedict estate?
I'd love to start by commending Mary J. Willam's writing style. It was fun, relaxed, and friendly. Reading this book felt like listening to a friend narrate a story to me. She skillfully used different writing techniques to convey different messages. There was an element of humor. She also used figures of speech at strategic places. While doing that, she made sure the flow of the book wasn't affected. This made the book a joy to read. I had to shelve a lot of activities to ensure I don't break my reading flow. That was how interesting I found this book to be.
I also loved the background details the author gave at the beginning of the book. It was essential, considering that the book is the first in a series. This also helped me understand certain incidents that occurred much later in the book. I have read some novels that got me confused when I got to certain points. But I was never confused at any point as I read this book.
The author also scored a point with the character development of this book. It wasn't laden with characters that had little or no significant role in the plot. Every character was on point. It was easy for me to pick out the main character of the book. Yet, the relevance of the other characters wasn't lost in any way.
There was nothing I disliked about this book. There were just two sentences I found a bit confusing. However, it didn't affect my reading flow. The book was well written and professionally edited. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. Though the book contains minimal erotic content, I would only recommend it to anyone from 18 years up.
