Midwinter Turns to Spring by Maria Veloso is a romance novel about two individuals, Alfonso Madrigal and Savannah Curtis. The story begins when Cassidy discovers a hidden journal in the drawer of her newly-rented Victorian apartment. Reading the journal, it breaks her heart about how real their love was which made her set out to find more about the people in the journal, Alfonso and Savannah.

Alfonso Madrigal, a flamenco guitarist is married with a daughter. He spent most of his childhood in Malaga and Madrid before moving to San Francisco to start a new life. He met Savannah when he attended one of her lectures on Picasso, a famous artist. Ever since he had spotted her on stage, she has ignited a spark in him that he couldn't yet explain.

Savannah Curtis, an artist by profession is engaged to be married. She met Alfonso after one of her lectures when he approached her about a painting that belonged to his grandmother and needed her help to authenticate it. There was something about him that made her quite uncomfortable that she couldn't pinpoint.

One thing led to another that made them started seeing each other and not too long after, they started dating. Alfonso saw love in Savannah, the kind of love he has been searching for all his life, a love that made him feel whole and expects nothing in return. Although, he seems to be in turmoil about his vows to his family and the love he feels for Savannah.

Savannah, on the other hand, was in love with a man she couldn't have. It was against everything she believes but she couldn't seem to fight the true love between them. Seeing him one day with his family made her realize she has to leave him if not for anything but for his daughter. She left a letter for him at a club he performs and left San Francisco erasing all traces of her.

Twenty-six years later, Alfonso received an anonymous e-mail about the whereabouts of Savannah, now by the name Savannah Fairchild. Unfortunately, on the day they were supposed to meet, an accident happened that will change their life and everything they hold dear. Will they pass the test of time and obstacles on their path? Or will theirs just be a love story that never comes to fruition?

What I like most about this book is that it is so unlike other romance novels, it feels so real that I began to think maybe it happened to someone. The storyline breaks my heart and connects deeply with the reader's soul. Apart from that, since some parts of the story set in Malaga and Madrid, there were a few Spanish words spoken in the book and I get to understand some Spanish dialects. I also like that I get to learn things in the novel different from the romance intended, like why some birds flock together in a V-shape, the scientific facts about planets and evolution among others. One could see the author is very well vast in knowledge.

I don't have anything I liked the least about the novel because I enjoyed every part of it, it was incredibly amazing and exceptionally flawless. Although, I would have appreciated more Savannah and Alfonso moments in their older years. The novel has a bit of erotic and mature content and it is therefore not recommended for children and people who have a distaste for such.

The supporting characters were all great, they compliment the storyline perfectly. They were neither too excessive nor scarce. The supporting characters I liked the most are Cassidy and Brandon. For a moment, I thought there will be a sub-romance between them as one seems to notice the chemistry between them. The supporting characters I dislike the most are Rusell Parker and Lyndon Curtis, they both seem to portray a perfect image of which they are not.

In this regard, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The novel is amazing and was professionally edited as I did not notice a single spelling and grammatical error while reading the book. The book will most appeal to lovers of romance stories and people who are interested in knowing the way of life of other tribes and their language. The book might not appeal to those that have a distaste for romance and also English readers who don't like reading up Spanish or other language content in a novel.
