Midwinter Turns to Spring is one of the most beautiful and magical romance novels I have ever read.

The story begins when Cassidy Hamilton moves into a new apartment and finds a hidden drawer tucked behind the baseboard of a cabinet and, inside, the journal of a woman who lived once lived there, Savannah Curtis. In the journal, the story of how Alfonso Madrigál, a Flamenco guitarist, and Savannah, and art professional, met and fell in love is revealed but also leaves many unanswered questions. Intrigued, Cassidy investigates the end of the story of Alfonso and Savannah, finding clues in a record album by Zendrik, a painting thought to be the work of Pablo Picasso, and the journal of Savannah.

Maria Veloso allows us to follow Cassidy in her journey and fall in love with the story as much as she did. Just like the journal did to Cassidy: from the start, Midwinter Turns to Spring “began to stir a calloused space in my heart and overcome my cynical side, the side that detested the infatuation-driven, formulaic paradigms of love that were always long on romance and short on substance.”

The voice, tone, and language were beautiful. I didn’t find any typos, grammar errors, or sentences that were difficult to read. I love how real the characters and their story felt, which is no longer so easy to find within this genre. Be ready; you might have to finish the book before you get up again. Midwinter Turns to Spring will leave your mouth open throughout every page and will make your jaw drop to the ground on the very last page.

I particularly admire how Maria has revolutionized not only the genre but also literature as a whole by incorporating music in the narration of the story. When I first read the official description of the book, I was afraid the music album would be unnecessary, but it complemented Maria’s words in a surprisingly harmonious way.

This story is complex and mature. If you think you’re ready to dive into a true love story, go ahead, get yourself a copy, and keep your expectations high, Midwinter Turns to Spring will not disappoint you.

There is not any doubt that Maria Veloso is an artist and that Midwinter Turns to Spring is a work of art; there is not one thing that I would change about it. It is a 4 out of 4 to me.
