Midwinter Turns to Spring by Maria Veloso is a romantic drama set in the background of Spanish culture. This book Comprises six main characters throughout generations of the same family and connects its readers with the depth that only a family bond can know.

As well as being an accomplished artist, Savannah works as an art authenticator. When Alfonso brings her a painting that he believes to be an original Picasso, she’s intrigued. Her interest does not stop at the picture, however, and she finds herself inexplicably drawn to Alfonso. To complicate matters, Alfonso is not only married but has a child, six-year-old Cristina, whom he adores. Is there a way for their romance to blossom while still maintaining their mutual respect? You’ll have to read this book to find out!

I loved the connection to fine art that this book carries. The main heroine in the book is an artist, the grandmother of the leading male character was friends with Picasso and was painted by him in a portrait. These things illuminate a deep and creative plot for readers, drawing them along on a mysterious and creative romance.

The character development is excellent in this book. As an artist myself, I identified with Savannah when she spoke of the feeling of creating artwork. I liked the respect that this author shows the art community as a whole, and enjoyed the education that this well-researched book provided regarding the art world and how it works. Art history paints a beautiful sub-plot to this multi-generational story.

I enjoyed the smooth and flawless writing style in this work. Even though it did jump back and forth between different times and places throughout the story, I was never left feeling lost or having to go back and re-read sections.

What I liked most about his book is the fantastic descriptions of the beautiful countryside. The author does a fantastic job of creating the perfect backdrops for each scene in the book and adds depth to each one, no matter what the location.

Although there are love scenes in this book, they are very tasteful. If you are a fan of the romance genre, you’ll love this book’s focus on a meaningful love story. There was a bittersweet feel throughout, but in spite of the many bitter aspects during the storyline, the sweet ones overpower them all.

All in all, I could find nothing to dislike about this book. It seems professionally edited. The few errors I noted were minor and didn’t affect the book’s quality. For this reason, I rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars. It will appeal to readers who enjoy a dramatic story that entertains. Readers who prefer light romance and don’t like drama may find this book a heavy read.
