Review by Kylie Wallis 87 -- One Way or Another
In One Way or Another by Mary J Williams, an unexpected love story unfolds...
Calder Benedict and her sisters Andi, Destry and Bryce have always been close for as long as they have lived. An absentminded, self-absorbed mother and barely involved fathers who seem to just jump from one partner to the next, were clearly not the best role models for growing girls. The sisters manage to survive into adulthood and make something of themselves. Despite being born into a rich and well-known family, the girls have not grown up to feel as if they are entitled to behave like they are above others in any way.
Adam Stone was born without much wealth. His father died when he was very little. Adriana his mother raised her son well. He came home from a stint in the military and began to build up his own business which now makes him a tidy sum. One night after diffusing a potentially bad situation, he notices Calder but keeps it cool. As he starts to get to know her, for the first time in his life Adam considers a more than casual kind of relationship. A former fling doesn't seem too happy with this sudden change in attitude.
Calder is a fierce and independent woman who knows people tend to underestimate her. She loves to prove them wrong. Donations to her charity organisation have been hard fought for and at last are starting to pay off. There's even the possibility of expanding overseas. Based on previous experiences, men and serious involvements have never been that high on her list of priorities. Yet from the moment they crossed paths, Calder was drawn to Adam. Will he turn out to be yet another mistake or has she finally found what she has for so long believed to be impossible?
This isn't the kind of genre I would usually choose, but the title caught my attention and I thought why not give the book a go? I found I rather enjoyed reading it. Each sister has her own path she must travel on but never do they forget their bond. If a problem arises, they face it together. Billie Benedict has had her share of troubles in the past which she often brings down upon herself. The girls try their best to watch out for her regardless of her lack of mothering skills. I am curious enough to find out what might happen to the Benedict family next. This was only book one.
I saw no spelling or grammatical errors, but I did spot a few swear words. There had to be some sensual moments as the two main characters gave in to their mutual attraction, with just the right amount of explicit detail. This is after all contemporary romance, not pornography. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I think readers mostly of the female variety will like reading the book but I would not judge if guys happen to read it too.
