Review by MeganDJ -- One Way or Another by Mary J. Williams
One Way or Another: A Friends to Lovers Contemporary Romance (The Sisters Quartet Book 1) by Mary J. Williams is the first installment of four in The Sisters Quartet series. This beautifully woven, romance follows the life of Calder Benedict, a wealthy elite by inheritance. The rest of the series illustrates and fleshes out the lives of the remaining Benedict sisters and delves deeper into their inner thoughts and personalities.
From a wealthy background and an established name, the Benedict sisters seemed to have it all. Wealth, beauty, power and influence are a few words that have been used to describe the Benedicts’ empire. However, a closer look under the family façade reveals a scandalous and unorthodox family history. The matriarch, Billie Benedict, is a carefree and self-centered soul that did not let moral and ethical marital rules prevent her from having children outside of her marital bed. A few indiscretions later, she had given birth to four daughters, each of them having a different father and wildly different personalities. Connected by a negligent mother, and wayward fathers, the Benedict sisters created a unique bond that supported and nurtured them throughout their childhood and remains stronger than ever.
This narrative follows Calder Benedict, the second eldest daughter in the Benedict line. With her naturally self-less, determined and supportive demeanor, Calder orchestrated the creation of a multi-million dollar children’s charity known as Erica’s Angels. Her success and physical beauty had often drawn the attention of the wrong crowd, and Calder yearned for a better breed of romance than what she was used to. Along came Adam Stone, a self-made facilitator and absolute gentlemen, who had saved Calder from an altercation with a delusional suitor. From the very moment they met, both were smitten, and after many ups and down, they gave love a try.
Meanwhile. a wealthy man notorious for darker dealings and outlandish schemes had made his way into the Benedict mansion by seducing Billie. Armed with knowledge, local rumours and personal experience, the Benedict sisters devise a plan to uncover the truth about Ingo Hunter's intentions for Billie and her family. However, time is running out. Will it be possible to figure out what Ingo Hunter is truly planning before it is too late?
The narrative is fantastically written and had a lovely natural flow of events that kept me captivated for most of my day. The amazing character development and fleshed-out stories of the main protagonists allowed them to feel more relatable and had me in their corner for most of the book. Let’s not forget the charismatic banter between Adam and Calder, and the comfortable and natural ease that they had in each other's company. The author enveloped the reader into a rich and captivating world that is beautifully crafted. The narrative easily showed the love and attention that the author gave to the creation of this world. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, every single page and the only disappointment I felt was at the end of it when it left me with a cliffhanger and a hunger for more.
With all that being said, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was exceptionally well-edited, and I caught only a few grammatical errors. Since it is a romance title, it has suggestive and erotic content that may be a bit too much for younger audiences. I would highly recommend this book to young adults and romance lovers alike as it is a highly captivating read and will keep you enthralled until the very end.
