Parenting can be very hard, but growing up, as a child, in a family where your parents have completed neglected you, to a point where you’re completely on your own, is the hardest. Often, such children end up with ruined lives and characters. However, this wasn’t the case with the four Benedicts. In her book, One Way or Another, Mary J. Williams narrates a story of Calder, Andi, Bryce, and Destry; the four girls who, despite being neglected by their parents, stand strong, together, and makes some ground-breaking decisions that leave one wondering what the source of the strength is.

Billie Benedict is the mother of these four girls. However, each girl has a different father, including the twins. Billie is a flirty woman who has failed to take care of her children. She moves from one man to another and, despite having inherited some wealth from her father, still looks for wealthy men. While in a restaurant with her boyfriend pounding over their differences, Calder spots her mother hooking up with Ingo Hunter. We later learn that, despite his wealth, Ingo Hunter is a very immoral man who has dated all the four Benedicts. The Benedicts, together, make a powerful force, but will they overcome this one? It also comes out that these girls have challenges in their relationships. Calder, for instance, has had multiple disagreements with Milo, her boyfriend, to the point of even breaking up. Will the girls find their ground into a stable relationship or will they follow into the footsteps of their mother?

Structurally, this 411 paged book is subdivided into 29 chapters. It is a character-driven fictional romance novel that is not only entertaining but also educational. Teens, especially those from dysfunctional families, may find it motivational too. Some dominant themes include love and romance, betrayal, family relations among others. It also gives a realistic picture of the effects of parents’ behavior on their children.

Apart from an exciting storyline, this book’s characterization appealed to me the most. Calder, for instance, is portrayed as the head of the family, especially now that their mother has neglected them. She organizes the girls, their meetings, and chairs most of their discussions and decisions. Andi is an ambitious young lady with big dreams. She’s future-oriented and, despite their challenges, her head is filled with dreams of a better future.

Although most part of the book is well-edited, I found some errors in the first few pages. This may be a turnoff for readers, especially now that I found over two errors on the first page. I, therefore, recommend that another round of editing be carried out, with a focus on the first few pages.

Although there were some grammar errors, they didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book. I, therefore, rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The storyline will please anyone who enjoys romance novels. However, grammar sensitive individuals are likely to be put off by the first few pages.

Character driven story about four girls in a dysfunctional family. I think this is a thought provoking novel which the readers will be able to learn a thing or two about facing life’s challenges when you are neglected from your family, especially by your parents. Nice review!
