Review by nicole2220 -- One Way or Another
One Way or Another by Mary J. Williams tells the incredible love story of Calder Benedict and Adam Stone. A contemporary romance set in New York City in the 21st century is where readers are introduced to the love life of Calder Benedict and her sisters as they navigate being single and successful. Calder and her sisters Bryce, Andi and Destry are born into what seems to be a complicated life with their only real love coming from one another. They are provided with wealth and family prestige from their grandfather's name but cannot inherit it entirely since they are all female. Instead the sisters along with their mother are left an allowance to spend and they all decide over time to spend it very differently.
Billie is shown to have been a neglectful mother who is more concerned with her own love life instead of her daughter's well beings. Father figures are also absent for most of the girls lives, only appearing during the summers of the separation. Although all the women in the novel are wealthy the author goes out of her way to truly highlight the strengths of each woman as an individual for their talents and from their hard work. Calder goes out of her way to defy the stereotypes that are forced upon because of her wealth. This leads her to start a charity and grow the organization on her own and devotes herself to helping people.
One night after having less than stellar success in her dating life and at the end of terrible date she meets Adam. Adam steps in to assist her as her date started to act hostile. The two share a brief exchange and then wanting to make sure she gets home safely he hails her a cab. Sparks fly between the two as neither is willing to back down on at any point in their brief conversation and the two part obviously shaken by the other. The book does an amazing job of going deeper into each character beyond the surface of their income and class.
The author does a great job of conveying the obstacles they each personally had to face themselves in order to accept love from someone. The book deals with themes of family and vulnerability as the character struggle with their pasts. Each sister is also given time to talk with Calder during the events of the book which further helps to cement how close their relationships really are. Which is something else I think makes this book very special, each sister really is trying to support one another. The author makes sure you can tell they care for Calder in every situation and they have her back.
There is even some mystery thrown in that I enjoyed as another element of the story. Overall, the book was a great read I would give it the 4 out of 4. I would recommend the book to anyone who loved Pride and Prejudice as it is a new modern classic. This is a book with a lot of strong female characters who feel like real modern women who are ready for romance and the book was extremely well written. Another great comparison would be for any women who liked the Devil Wears Prada as many of the women there and in this book are smart and talented as well.
