Review by Herbstlicht -- One Way or Another
One Way or Another by Mary J. Williams is a modern tale of love, trust, and family bonds. It is the first book in a series of four books that depict the lives of the four Benedict sisters. Calder, the protagonist of the book, is a wealthy young woman who runs a successful charity organization. She enjoys the perks of her untroubled life, the strong bond with her sisters, and her fulfilling career, cautiously aware of the fact that she has never found love. All Benedict women seem similar in this regard - all except for Billie, their mother, a careless and self-absorbed forever-young-wannabe, who has married a dozen times and doesn't intend to stop. Billie's newest beau is a reckless, dangerous man who apparently has an agenda, so the Benedict sisters plot to uncover it. By chance, life also throws Adam in the mix, a mysterious young man who dares to challenge Calder's ways and seeps into her life by building trust bridges to the woman who doesn't believe in true love.
I certainly didn't know what to expect of this book because I'm unsure what the title relates to - but I enjoyed reading it very much. It is lighthearted entertainment of the finest sort - it depicts real feelings and ghosts from the past, the characters are likable and the dialogues very witty. I personally enjoy it when the characters involved are a bit more realistic, with their flaws exposed and their actions not always perfect, but this is a matter of taste and it certainly didn't disrupt my reading experience.
One of the weakest points to me was the conspiracy between Calder's father and Adam's ex-girlfriend. I felt like this sort of teenage-drama wasn't adequate for the otherwise good quality of the plot development. I was certainly well surprised by the developments and the cliffhanger at the end of the book, as I expected a clear cut, so I'm left curious and eager to read the next book in the series.
The language included a few profanities but there were so few of them that I don't think any (young) adult readers would feel offended. The description of the love scenes was conducted very decently. In regard to the editing of the book, I believe it could benefit from another round of proof-reading, as I spotted five mistakes.
I rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars and look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series. I also would like to read more of Mary J. Williams as she seems to have found a number of ways to make her characters worth remembering.
