One Way or Another by Mary J. Williams, is the first in the Sisters Quartet series about four sisters with an exceptional bond, and the path each takes to find their happily-ever-after.

What happens when a successful businesswoman in the non-profit world, crosses paths with a blue-collar Navy vet? Instant chemistry. Calder Benedict is suspicious of nearly everyone, after she and her sisters have experienced a lifetime of deceit and ulterior motives. Adam Stone is successful and wealthy in his own right, so he is not interested in Calder’s inheritance. Much to her surprise, he is genuinely drawn to her strong, independent personality, and is happy to let her be her own person. They have each faced adversity is their pasts, that make the walls they have built to protect themselves both something they have in common, and a challenge. They need to find a way to let their walls down and trust each other in order to overcome an outside threat.

There are also several story lines leading into the other books of the series, including their mother’s sinister new love interest, who is no stranger to the sisters. Then there is each sister, who have a personality and story of their own, of which we only get a glimpse. This is a stand-alone novel, but it does end with a small cliffhanger, enticing the reader to continue with the series.

The author creates a good background of the characters and their relationships to other characters, but not too much detail as to lose focus of the main plot.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was well edited, with very few minor errors (one of which Adam’s last name is referred to as Steel instead of Stone). What I liked most about the book was the humor and human aspect of the characters that one can easily relate to. What I disliked most was that the plot started out a little slow, and at times, it seemed to jump ahead or back in the storyline. Once the characters were developed and interacting, it was a fast read. The instant chemistry of the main characters was hard to miss, and I wanted to find out what happened next. Overall, the flow of the book was great.

This book is intended for readers 18 and over, with light sexual scenes and topics of sexual abuse and marital indiscretions.
