Review by Katbow -- One Way or Another by Mary J. Williams
I give One Way or Another 4 out of 4 stars! The story follows Calder Benedict, one of four heiress sisters living in Manhattan. Calder’s mother is a serial bride and, as such, is always on the hunt for the next “love of her life”. When their mother is seen on the arm of Ingo Hunter, a known creep, the girls worry that he is after something more than her tantalizing company. Calder bumps into Adam outside of a club one night and then again, the following day in seemingly fated circumstances. Adam has carved his own way in the world. Once he left the Navy, he created a job using his people skills to connect others with the perfect person for whatever job they may have. While Adam has done well for himself, he has humble beginnings, whereas, Calder was born into luxury. As the two meet and grow as a couple, they must choose whether, or not, to let their past experiences dictate their perception of the other’s intentions. Can Calder trust that Adam’s interest is genuine and not motivated by money? Will Calder fit into Adam’s modest lifestyle?
I found both Calder and Adam to be very mature in all their dealings. Both are levelheaded and conscientious. It was refreshing for conflict to be resolved in a mature manner while still maintaining the emotion and angst of a good relationship arc. It’s not often you find a romance where the couple uses appropriate communication skills to work out most of their issues. Calder is not the type of heroine to easily jump to conclusions.
Calder’s sisters all have very clearly defined and entertaining personalities. Mary J. Williams did an excellent job of providing just enough intriguing detail about each sister to bait you into wanting to read the rest of the books in the series to find out how each sister finds her happily ever after. Calder’s mother Billie is intriguing and frustrating. She is vain, self-centered, and her need to recklessly find love is the driving force that will connect all the sisters’ stories together.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the maturity of the main characters, I did find the intensity of the romance to be lacking. Adam and Calder’s romance was heartwarming and satisfying, but it was not passionate nor heart-wrenching. I feel that while the author did include passionate situations, the intensity of their connection was not explored.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because the story was well written, well edited, the characters were well thought out, and the storyline flowed nicely. While there was not an intense amount of passion, I felt the characters had chemistry and worked as a couple. This book is for those looking for a heartwarming, minimally angsty, romance with levelheaded love-interests. This book does contain some mentions of sexual assault. It is not part of the storyline but is background info given about one of the characters.
