Review by Sbrannock -- A Long Dark Rainbow
When Michael Tappenden wrote A Long Dark Rainbow he supports the fact that erotica should be taken seriously since sex is a part of being human.
He creates Alexander James, an artist in North London, who is faced with many insecurities as he nears 70 years old, never married and alone. But yet the writer uses this as a part of keeping it real. As with the idea of being aroused by perfection, no matter what age or what perfection really means in the eye of the beholder.
In the beginning Alex James talks about how he felt weird in the darkness with his thoughts of his sexual appetite. His memories go back to his youth and his longing for something or someone missing in his life. He recalls his college days and the secrets that he has never shared with anyone until he crosses paths with an old acquaintance that he had a crush on and never pursued many years before. Will he ever be able to share his secrets and his true feelings with another?
Samantha Reagan lives alone in a big empty home that she once shared with her ex husband who did not fulfill her desires. She has two daughters that she sees once a year and she has insecurities because of her age and loneliness. Alex's nude pencil drawings could capture her youth. Will she allow this? Would this give her strength and hope? Or will a secret from his past be too much to allow her to commit to his touch?
Samantha spends her days passing time in her shop when Alex comes in one day to get a book. This leads to her fixing lunch for him, a true attempt in getting Alex out of his flat and to visit her at her home, and a train ride where they are faced with a human tradegy. Will this form an even stronger bond between them or build a barrier of deception? The Jimson Weed painting, the brevity and fragility of life? Will they embark on a sexual journey once secrets are uncovered? Or will this hold more insecurities, grudges and broken memories?
Rainbows can be seen as a message from the Universe or Spirit that you are headed in the right direction. The meaning of rainbows is a symbol of hope in many cultures. I believe the author truly captures this meaning in this book. After it rains, rainbows often indicate that the rain has passed. According to the Bible, the rainbow is the sign of God's promise to mankind that he will never again flood the earth.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . The writer does not use cliches or dirty accusations, although the f word was used in this book, it was in the latter part, page 140. This book should have an audience of young adults and older, all genders, since it is so well written. I believe this book was well edited since there were no typos or errors. The only errors I found were where some of the lines were repeated from the bottom of a page to the next page, thus saying the same line twice. This book has a blend of thriller added also. It is a passionate journey of aging adults and it is sensual yet pure.
