[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Will's Heart" by R.J. Stevens.]
Will's Heart by R.J. Stevens is a romance novel centered around Will Wolf and Samantha Andrews, known as Sam. The story starts when the Wolf brothers hire Sam, a city girl from Texas, to be their housekeeper. Will, the eldest of the brothers, quickly falls in love with her, but things are not easy for him since he is battling demons from his past. Then, things get even more complicated when the brothers discover Sam's dark past, which includes a very dangerous stalker who is on the hunt for her. Both Sam and Will have a lot to figure out and overcome before either of them can have a happily ever after.
My favorite aspect of this book is that it is as much of a thriller as it is a romance novel. Sam’s stalker adds a lot of suspense and high emotions to the story, yet it never feels like the suspense overpowers the romance or vice versa. I also loved that the author managed to write a good book without using any profanity or sex scenes. For this reason, it is a good romance novel that both younger and older readers can enjoy.
Another aspect of the novel I really liked was the way the author wrote the emotions of the characters. As I was reading, I was impressed by how well the author captured each emotion she was trying to convey, especially because there were many complex emotions throughout the book. Many of the strong emotional scenes have to do with serious traumatic events. There are also other types of strong emotions, such as yearning, hoping, and lamenting.
My least favorite part of the book was the lack of diversity in the dialogue. Most of the characters are from the same small town of Wolf Creek. Therefore, it makes sense for them to talk similarly. However, even characters that were not from Wolf Creek had similar accents and forms of expression. The characters did have different personalities; they just all seemed to talk in the same way.
The novel was enjoyable, and the suspense embedded in it kept me glued to the book. Nevertheless, as I finished the book, I couldn’t shake off the feeling it was missing something. As nice as the story was, it was not memorable, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on the reason why. I thought about it for a while and realized the reason this love story wasn’t outstanding for me is that Will and Sam fell in love too quickly. I personally prefer it when more time is taken to develop a romance. I would have also wanted a few more scenes of Will and Sam having private conversations about something other than their traumas. Don’t get me wrong, it was a pleasant romance novel, it just wasn’t the type of romance novel I prefer. Furthermore, there were a few times when I did not agree with the actions of the male characters.
I give this book 3 out of 4 stars since I did enjoy the book and would recommend it to those who like reading about country life and romance. The main reason for not giving this book 4 stars is the high amount of small grammar mistakes throughout the novel. Those small mistakes did manage to distract me from time to time. It is also important to mention that this book is part of a series, but it is a stand-alone book.
