Review of Chameleons
Chameleons by Onyx Gold, is one of the best books that I've read in a while. There's love, lust, betrayal, and murder. I would describe this book as the perfect mixture of romance and thriller. The writing is impeccable, each time I would decide it was time to put the book down for the night I wanted to pick it right back up. Zia is a literary agent hoping to find the perfect book, in order to skyrocket her career. Zia has terrible anxiety and doesn't converse with many people at work, other than her best friend Jazz. At her office building, she runs into the charming Bryce. Zia tries to stay away from Bryce, but he sends her gifts to meet him for a date. As much as Zia tries to push Bryce away he is persistent and the two end up together. Zia comes across a book called Chiseled Bone, written by Baxter, and she quickly falls in love with the book. Zia becomes Baxter's agent and together they get a huge book deal. Throughout the book tour, the two become close and end up furthering their relationship. Zia ends up being stuck between love or passion. One day, Zia notices an eerily similar murder on the news and realizes it is from Baxter's book. Throughout there are snippets of the murders' point of view, which kept things interesting. I kept going back and forth on who could be responsible. Eventually, Zia connects all the dots and has to decide what she is going to do, but can she survive?
This book is absolute perfection and I can't rave about it enough. Between Gold's descriptive writing and the mix of romance and thriller, I couldn't get enough. I will definitely be reading book two to see where the story goes next, even though this could act as a stand-alone book. The characters are well developed and I truly felt like I got to know each of them. Zia is a strong but quirky main character, Jazz is a loyal friend, Bryce is prince charming, and Baxter is interesting. The descriptive language really paints the perfect picture, even in regards to details that one might normally look over. I will definitely be looking for other books by Gold, because of how incredible this book is. My two favorite genres are probably thrillers and romance and this book perfectly walked the line.
Personally, there was nothing negative to this book but for some, there may be a couple of triggers. There are some intense erotic scenes, disturbing and descriptive language about murders, and manipulative behavior. It all added to the book and didn't cross a line for me, but I do believe it could be a bit much for others.
I would recommend this book to a mature audience, due to the violence and sexual content. There are some very descriptive sexual scenes that should be only for a mature audience, as well as descriptions of gruesome murders and mentions of rape.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is impeccably written. I really enjoyed reading this book and looked forward to reading more each night. The plot keeps you guessing and the characters are well developed. This book is a must-read!
