Review of Midwinter Turns to Spring
A mysterious might be or might not be painting of Picasso and an apartment in Pacific Avenue brings them together. This leads to the consequential unfolding of the events in the life of Alfonso Madrigal and Savannah Curtis. These two have had their own fair share of pain growing up but fate has other plans for them. Alfonso is a flamenco guitarist from Malaga who comes to Madrid armed with his guitar and the two possessions bequeathed to him by his late grandmother then later to San Francisco. A painting and a tambourine. Due to personal issues, he decides to get the painting authenticated to estimate its value upon sale though half-heartedly. His decision leads to him meeting the wonderful Savannah who is a professional art authenticator, appraiser and an artist in her own right. Love blooms between them but circumstances and promises won’t let them be. Decades later, the same mysterious painting and a lady willing to believe in their love who lives in the same apartment in Pacific Avenue brings them back together.
Midwinter Turns to Spring is a romance story that depicts the thin line between humanity and spiritualism. Upon reading the first few paragraphs, I thought that this would be just another clichéd portrayal of love and romance story that ends flavorless. Maria Veloso outdoes herself as she spins this story in such a way that surprises you and one finds themselves craving to read more and more. She sets the book based on art and music that takes you to a more complex kind of consciousness that words can’t even explain.
Quoting the words of Cassidy, a character in the book, if you’ve never been moved by a song so deep that it touched places in your heart you didn’t know existed. If you’ve never heard a guitar weep, or lost yourself in its tears. If you’ve never been swept up in the delirium of a love that defies all odds, this story will open your eyes to what’s possible when one dares to love. The plot twists created make the book to be enchanting and adds to its novelty. Other characters like Cristina, Aunt Sabine, Zendrik, Brandon and Cassidy make the book more interesting.
The author explains love as all bearing and conquering. The love shown in this book is the kind that any romantic out there hopes for and believes of its existence. This love spans over generations and shows what great things it can achieve. The philosophical views and beliefs that the author tells make you as a reader think beyond what you believe in. Furthermore, your imagination is brought alive and you can’t help envisioning yourself in the characters shoes. The book is exceptionally well edited and I did not encounter any errors while reading it. Additionally, the author has narrated the story in different timelines and still manages to capture the attention of the readers. Only a few authors can manage this. Thus, I am rating it 4 out of 4 stars .
The book is well suited for young adults and everyone else who is willing to set aside all their preconceived notions about love, and read the story as if told by a close friend. It is impossible to read this book and remain unchanged. It may open up your eyes as it did mine.
